Outfit of the Week

This week's outfit is for the modern girl.  I picture this outfit as worn by someone without kids, or someone who has kids that we would wish that we were!  Enjoy!

Top:  Jennifer Lopez Leopard Faux Wrap Top in blue/multi - current price at Kohls:  $30.80.  This cute top will go great with either a cute pair of jeans or wide-leg trousers depending on where you are wearing this.  If it is for the workplace, I'd definitely recommend either a white or light blue cami underneath.

Jeans:  Jennifer Lopez Straight-Leg Jeans - current price at Kohls:  $39.99.  When you have a top that has a bit more volume, it is good to keep things semi-fitted down below, if you can.  So for girls that can wear them, a great pair of straight-leg jeans will give you that look!

Shoes: Call it Spring 'Zaxas' Pumps in Camel - current price at jcpenney:  $49.99.  These cute nude platforms pumps have a mary-jane strap that makes them even cuter in my mind.  These are a pretty high heel so definitely not for the amateur!

Ring:  Fashion Jewelry, Turquoise Ring - current price at jcpenney:  $24.99.  This outfit doesn't need a lot of accessories with the bold pring on top.  I believe a nice statement ring is a great way to accessorize this and give you the vibe I feel this outfit is - bold fashion.

Inspiration Friday - Quinnie Update

This past weekend was an exciting weekend in our household for a couple different reasons.  One I do believe led to the other.  Let me elaborate.

A little bit before Owen's birthday (early September), he began to ask us for a kitty for a present.  We thought about it, but didn't get one for his birthday.  We wanted to do some investigation into getting a cat with two kids (5 years old and 16 months) as well as take some consideration to the responsibilites that getting a pet would include.  (Note - we did have a cat before, so it was not a new experience, but with each stage in our lives, roles and responsibilities change).

In early October, after we had done our research, we decided to start looking into adopting a kitten.  We preferred a kitten to a cat so that the kitten would not know a life without our kiddos in it!  We looked into a couple of different adoption places and looked on petfinder.  I was looking at some pictures and Owen saw a picture of a kitten that he really liked.  So, I contacted the adoption agency (which was actually someone fostering the kittens - there were 6 of them, in her home).  We set up a time for the whole family to go visit the kittens last Friday night.

Owen and Quinn both seemed to enjoy the kittens and did well with them.  Quinnie had to be told to use nice hands quite a few times, but she didn't hurt any of the kittens!  When we left that night, we were pretty sure of a kitten that we wanted to get, but the lady wanted us to think about it first.

When we got home that night, I was playing with Quinn on the floor.  We have also been trying to walk more with her to get her practicing more.  I started getting her going (walking) toward Daddy and then I slowly let her get out of my reach and she took about 4 steps by herself to Daddy!!  We were both so excited to see her so happy and willing to do this.  She has continued to do this a couple of times a day.  I know that we are definitely on our way now!

How are these two things connected?  I believe that Quinn saw the motivation to get up and moving when she was surrounded by all those kittens that she wanted to get her hands on :)  So I share this today as we are seeing more and more reasons in our daughter to be inspired by.  She is making progress everyday even if it isn't on the "planned timeline."  She is our Quinnie and she brings joy to our lives everyday with all that she does.

What would you do?

So, first let me give you some background on the situation.  Owen is in kindergarten, but it is only half day at the public school whose district we are in.  Thus, I was happy when I found that the daycare he would go to would also do a kindergarten class for the other half of the day.

Well, the daycare that he goes to was taking a field trip to the local pumpkin patch.  "That sounds like a fun idea" I thought.  Started to read a bit more closely and...

Cost for field trip - $14 ($6 for the pumpkin patch and $8 for the bus).
Note:  We will probably not make it back in time for the afternoon kindergarteners to make the bus, so if you want them to go, you can provide the transportation by picking them up at the pumpkin patch or picking them up at the daycare.  In addition, talk to ______ about if there will be an additional ($25) charge for the extra half of the day if they do not go the kindergarten.

Well, part of the reason I have daycare is I can't really do this pick-up kind of thing.  So Owen would have to miss kindergarten and I'd have to pay an extra $25 for the daycare.

So what would you do?
1.  Let him go on the field trip - allowing him to miss "regular" kindergarten and total extra cost:  $39
or
2.  Have him do his "regular" thing - but then he isn't included on the fied trip.

What I did below - but think about what you'd do first (I'd like insight for later field trips!)

We chose option 2 - he just did his regular thing, and luckily, he wasn't the only one.  In order to make him feel semi-included, he also wore the color of shirt that those going on the field trip were going to wear and we packed him a special lunch.  He was a little upset when I first told him that he wasn't going, but I explained that he would miss going to kindergarten and we are hoping to go to a pumpkin patch as a family this weekend anyways.

So all in all, I think we made a good decision.  What do you think?

C25K Update

It has been a really rough week - not going to lie.  I finished week 4 about a week and a half ago,  However, I didn't feel ready to move on last Wednesday when I went running.  So I stayed on week 4.  I haven't gone since that day.  However, I'm not giving up - I'm just going to repeat week 4.  I may not get to run my entire 5K on November 19th, but I'm still going to go through the training and I can do another 5K later that I can run the entire thing.  So even if I have to walk for part of the 5K on November 19th - I'll be there!

MY GOAL: To complete the 5K on November 19th with minimal (1 minute at a time) walking.

How am I feeling?: Doing ok - little down on myself knowing that I won't get to run it all but know that I am going to continue!

Current outlook for goal: Since I've changed my goal now, good!

What is hardest?: Believing in myself right now - I don't remember the last time I ran a mile without walking some (maybe when I was 14?).

Recommendations to those wanting to start the program: I have to go with last week's still here - especially now that I have to do it myself - Mini-goals. Maybe the idea of running a full 5K seems way to "out there." So set a mini-goal(s) along the way. I'm already setting the mini goal of making it to the week where I run for 8 minutes straight. (For some this may seem like a "weenie" goal, but the goal should be based on you and your current situation).

Anyone else out there start it? How are you doing?

Outfit of the Week

Today's outfit is for a casual afternoon - I imagine going out to eat with my family or going to the pumpkin patch (but if so, I'd go for my casual boots from this post).  I wanted to take the basic sweater and jeans and jazz it up through some cute accessories, shoes and a show-stopping winter coat.  Enjoy!

Sweater:  St. John's Bay Bright Cable Sweater in Pure Blue - Current Price:  $16.99 at jcpenney.  I love a basic v-neck sweater for the fall and winter months and this one is great as the v-neck doesn't go too low for a change (I get tired of wearing camis all of the time!)

Jeans:  Liz Claiborne Chelsea Jeans - Current Price:  $33.00 at jcpenney.  I really like the casual/weekend look of these jeans and they are relaxed enough without looking too baggy or big.  The rinse is light enough to be casual but dark enough to be chic.

Scarf:  MNG by Mango Print Scarf - Current Price - $27.92 at jcpenney.  A scarf is a great way to dress up a sweater in a basic color.  In addition, I like the scarf as compared to a necklace, not near as many issus when my daughter wants to play with it!

Shoe:  Olsenboye 'Presley' Pump in Fuschia - Current Price:  $49.99 at jcpenney.  How cute are these heels?  A bold pair of heels really dresses-up this outfit in a modern and young kind of way.  However, if you aren't a "pink" person - a cute pair of black or nude heels will do as well :)

Coat:  Worthington Military Inspired Belted Coat in Gray Twill - Current Price:  $74.99 at jcpenney.  It's getting close to that time of year again.  I think that this military inspired coat is on trend without being so trendy that it can last you for many years after this season.

So there it is folks - another week, another outfit.  More importantly - another reason to go shopping :)

Inspriration Friday - Truth telling

The biggest inspriration that I've had this week is not a well-known quote nor a picture that inspires me.  This week I have been inspired by someone I don't even know all that well.  Her and I both read the same blog and then checked out each other's blog.

I have only been reading her blog for a couple weeks, but she has already inspired me by sharing with me that I'm not the only one struggling with "typical" child development.

If you enjoy hearing mothers be honest about what is going on in their family's lives, I encourage you to go read her blog, Cookie Crums (here).

If you, or someone you know, is going through something similar, there is a great children's book called Ruby in Her Own Time:

An exerpt:

"Rufus, Rory, Rosie and Rebecca ate whatever they were given.  They ate anything and everything.  But Ruby ate nothing.  "Will she ever eat?" said father duck.  "She will" said mother duck, "in her own time.""

These Shoes were Made For Walking...

Well, sort of made for walking!

When Quinnie moved up rooms at daycare, they start taking the kids outside.  So I had a note one day to "Please bring Quinn shoes to protect her little toes."  It had never crossed my mind to get her shoes yet since she hasn't been walking without holding onto things.  Yet I did what I was told and found her a cute pair of sneakers, size 5 (which are a tiny bit too big right now):

When I first put these shoes on her, she was NOT a fan in any way, shape or form!  She has gotten very used to them though and they are beginning to get a bit scuffed up since she crawls around in them a lot.

I really hope that I don't develop a shoe addiction for her.  I sadly already feel when I get her in a cuter outfit that these shoes just don't go...but I won't buy a pair of shoes to match an outfit for her at this age.  Hmmm...........at least, not YET.  I do, however, see a cute pair of dressier shoes in her future.

I mean, really, do these pink sparkly sneakers go with this outfit?  She's only 1...she's only 1...No one is judging my child's footwear :)

Owen's 5th Birthday - Part II

Now, we'll talk about his favorite parts - presents and seeing family!

Even though we are out of state, he got to talk with his grandmas and grandpas on the day before his birithday (his birthday was on a Monday, not the best day of the week).

We started with my parents - my Mom was currently at a rehab place from her surgery, but my brother had brought up her laptop and got her internet hooked up so we could webcam.  She had sent a gift earlier for Owen so this way she got to see him open the gifts.  It was great getting to see her and my dad and I'm sure they enjoyed getting to see him open his gifts.

He loved it all - he got jammies, legos, and a remote control car!

We then got to talk to Brandon's parents - Owen was still on a sugar high from his cake at this point.  He was very excited to see Grandma and Grandpa, and especially Uncle Austin.

Owen also got to open a couple of gifts from Mom and Dad - he got a Nerf "arrow" football, a Nerf indoor basketball hoop/ball, and a Cars race track.

We also got to webcam with our Auntie April who hid a present for Owen's birthday when she was out here last - she got him "Scrabble Scoop" which he loves, he particularly loves when I get a bee and have to put all my letters back!  We were so busy webcamming, I didn't get a picture :(  So here's one of them from an earlier date.

Finally, I'll end with one of the things that made him very excited at school - he got a birthday crown!

Owen's 5th Birthday - Part I

So I'm finally getting around to posting about Owen's Birthday.  Due to picture overload, we'll take this across two posts!

Let's start with the our birthday outing.  We haven't really had a "big" party for Owen since his first birthday.  We have kept it very small since then for two reasons - one, now that we are out of state from all of our family, we can't really have a big family party.  Two - I don't really want to invite a lot of kids yet as we just switched daycares and he just started school.  I don't even know who the kids are in his class yet and don't know how to get ahold of the few he mentions ALOT.  So instead, we invited some family friends and their kids to go to Jump Zone for us.  This place was great for Owen - it had inflatable slides that you could run from one to the next without really having to wait much.  We got some pizza and he even got his first set of darts!

Then we got to have cake - he really wanted an ice cream cake like Mommy had for her birthday.  So we ordered one and he picked things - he wanted chocolate cake with white ice cream with cookies, fudge and chocolate chips mixed in.  Then, we needed blue frosting - here it is!

We'll do presents tomorrow!

Outfit of the Week

This week's outfit is for a workplace where you want to look professional but still like you (or here, I guess me!)

Top:  New York and Company's Mod Print Top in Blue Seclusion - current price:  $36.95.  Love this bold top that can be worn by itself or with a cute cardigan or even a denim jacket!

Pants:  New York and Company's 5th Avenue Straight Pants in Heather Gray - current price:  $49.95.  I want the attention on this bold top so I'm keeping everything else very neutral.   I love NYandCompany's pants as they come in petite (and even tall for those of you who are lucky enough to need that!)

Caridgan reuse!:  AB Studio Open Front Cardigan in black (though they have one in sapphire that would look gorgeous!!) - current price at Kohl's:  $22.99.  I love this cardigan, especially as it stays open so you can see this cute top still even if you are in cooler weather and need a cardi!

 via

Shoes:  Jones New York Cecelius Leather Pump - current price at DSW:  $39.94.  Thought I'd go with a more basic shoe for a change.  I love these - I am definitely a pointed-toe kind of girl.  In addition, these don't have a very high heel so I could probably handle a day of teaching in them.
 via

So here is a way of looking professional without losing your youth!  Hope you all like it - feel free to share you comments/adjustments.  Have a great week!

Quinn's progress

So, for those who have been reading, you have seen about some of the issues we'd have with Quinn's development.  Now, don't get me wrong - she has made some great strides with progress, but I know that I'm not an expert when it comes to development.

When our pediatrician asked us to get Quinn evaluated for the second time (the first time, she was "far enough" behind to qualify), I was a bit frustrated.  After I realized that it wasn't my fault and that I wasn't a failure, I thought to myself  - if this can help, why on earth would I not do it?  So, we had Quinn evaluated again.  The entire process took over a month due to regulations set for the program about how much time had to be between the steps.

This time, she qualified for services, but ironically not in the area the pediatrician referred her for (gross motor skills - not walking).  She qualified for my biggest concern - that she is being stubborn when it comes to self-feeding (this falls into the "self-help" category) and this is what she was most "behind" in.

(Complete aside - but I have to say it.  How they measure your child is a z-score (how many standard deviations your child is away from the average).  If they are more than 2 standard deviation below in one category or more than 1.5 standard deviations below in two categories, they qualify.  So now, for all those out there - someone just talked to me about Z-scores that you learn in statistics!  They were glad that they didn't have to explain it to me :)      )

They ruled out any neurological or physical concerns (so they don't recommend a physical therapist or anything yet).  It appears to just be developmental.  So now, she is getting a weekly visit from a developmental expert to help her (and us) get her past these hurdles.

In other news, Quinn is now out of her infant car seat and into the convertible seat.  She has to stay rear facing for now as they recommend rear-facing until at least 22 lbs (and actually say they should stay that way until 2 now).  I find this hilarious as Owen out grew the 22 lb weight limit of the infant car seat at 6 months :)

I'll keep you updated on Quinnie's progress

C25K Update

I have been told I need to make the time to do this. I try to do so and then other things come up with the hubby and kids. I'm still doing my best.   (C25K Program)

Since my last update, I have finished Week 3.  Then on Sunday, I started week 4.  Week 4 starts as:  5 minute warm up walk then do the following
Jog 3 minutes, Walk 90 seconds
Jog 5 minutes, Walk 2.5 minutes
Jog 3 minutes, Walk 90 seconds
Jog 5 minutes

And I did it!!!!

My hubby helped to give me a pep-talk before I left and I was determined to do it!

MY GOAL: To jog the entire 5K on November 19th!

How am I feeling?: Doing pretty well - not too sore yet.

Current outlook for goal: I have to take this one day at a time.  No matter what, I WILL be at the 5K!  My biggest fear about not meeting the goal is that the program takes me up to 30 minutes of jogging, and I think it will take me longer to do a 5K.

I'm already setting the mini goal of making it to the week where I run for 5 minutes straight. (For some this may seem like a "weenie" goal, but the goal should be based on you and your current situation).

Anyone else out there start it? How are you doing?

Outfit of the Week

This week's outfit is to step into fall with a casual dress that is appropriate for the work place. In addition, I have used the same two pairs of shoes from a previous outfit so that we can see how they can work here too!

Dress: Old Navy's Women's Boat-Neck Sweater in navy- current price: $44.94. I love the simplicity of this dress - it is like a blank canvas that the wearer can accessorize to fit their own style.  It also appears to be curve fitting (which you should prefer over the oversized sweater dress that looks more like a blanket).

Tights:  Old Navy's Women's Diamond Pattern Tights in gray - current price:  $7.50.  A sweater dress needs a pair of tights.  Here I have chosen a pretty classic pair/color with a small bit of excitement (diamond pattern) to make these appropriate fo the workplace.

Shoes:

Option 1: Dollhouse Sici Bootie - current price: $32.95 at DSW Shoes. These cute booties take the ruffle trend to your feet. These shoes are a cute way to take the dress into work without being boring.

Option 2: Bandolino Hamida (Wide Calf Boot option) - current price: $79.95 at DSW Shoes. These higher boots are a great way to take this dress out for a great night with the girls. These particular boots have the wider calf option which a lot of girls who want to wear this type of boots generally have a problem with. Sexy!

Accessory: Old Navy's Women's Tulip-Print scarf in blue- current price: $14.94. A cute printed scarf is a great way to accessorize, especially in the cooler months.  This particular scarf is one that will take someone who is not a scarf wearer to hopefully try one.  For those that loves scarves, go even bolder!

What do you think of this outfit? Like? Hate? Comments?  How would you make it your own?

Have a great week y'all!

Inspiration Friday

"Whatever you give to life, it gives you back.  Do not hate anybody.  The hatred which comes out from you will someday come back to you.  Love others and love will come back to you."

This is a quote that I've heard many times, seen on photos, etc.  It is amazing how much it can really make you think.  When life is tough and you feel like you can't do anything right; when someone tells you that they don't care about you anymore; when you are wallowing in self-pity.

I will leave you this weekend with something I need to remind myself of all the time.  It has gotten me through some pretty rough patches in my life.

The Serentity Prayer:
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.

5 year old food battles

Ok - so I'm starting honestly here.  I am a picky eater.  I know it, anyone that really knows me knows it too.  However...

why is my son an even pickier eater suddenly?  He used to eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that you put in front of him.  Now, if you put a piece of beef roast (which he loves) in a soup and ask him to just eat that piece of roast, it turns into a stand-off.

What did we do wrong so that he won't even TRY anything without a fuss?  How do I stop the battles at the table without cooking special for him (I refuse to make him something separate for supper)?  I do not ask him to eat anything that I won't eat in front of him (and believe me I have choked a few things down that I don't really like so that I'm not a hypocrite!)

We have a "behavior" chart at home and meal time is included with the decisions on this chart.  I don't want to intentionally hide foods that he should just eat as is as I really think that isn't the point.  I'm pretty sure if he tried many of these things with an open mind, he would like (or not hate) most of them.

Please give me some ideas!  I can't fight this battle every night!

Owen's 5 year check-up

Owen turned 5 on September 19th and we just had his check-up on Saturday.  In addition, he had an eye doctor appoinment on Friday.

The eye doctor appointment went really well.  We were seeing the new ophthalmologist at the outpatient Cincinnati Children's hospital since the last one moved.  I honestly liked this one better.  She put Owen at ease and showed real genuine interest in him and what we were doing.  I was also honest about the fact that we hadn't been doing the eyepatch for almost 2 months (once we got back from our vacation in Nebraska, it just seemed to have gotten pushed out of my mind).  After dilating his eyes and testing his prescription, his farsightedness had actually gotten better (needed a weaker prescription, just by a little).  So we are going to continue not patching his eye and see what happens in a couple of months.  He did, however, get new glasses which he is very excited about - they are even his favorite color, dark blue!

Old Glasses

New Glasses

His regular doctor appointment went well too. He is 46.25 inches tall (95th percentile) and 47.6 lbs (90th percentile).  He was very cooperative for this visit for a change, although I did warn he would get his flu shot.  The good news, for both of us, is they offered the inhaled, nasal one.  I asked if he preferred to be poked or to take a big sniff - guess which one he chose?  :)

He is very much enjoying kindergarten - he is beginning to tell time and write his address.  He is learning to recognize "sight" words in class and is everyone's friend now!

I'll post about his birthday celebration next...promise!

Outfit of the Week

This week's outfit is for the Mommy-on-the-go.  We can still look stylish even when chasing our kids around.

Top:  Apt. 9 Ruffled Blouse - Current price of $25.20 at Kohls.  This top is very cute, especially in this navy color.  It features a v-neck with some ruffles and a tie-waist which will define your waistline for you!

Cardigan:  ELLE  Marled Open Front Cardigan - Current price of $32.99 at Kohls.  This open cardigan allows for more of a casual look but still allows you to be put together!  I love this in the gray - makes me want to sit by a nice warm fire.

Jeans:  Curvy Bootcut Jean sin Gotham Wash - Current Price of $49.99 at New York and Company.  I am definitely a fan of these jeans as they give a curvier gal a nice fit, especially in the hips and thighs!  Also, always watch for NYandCompany coupons and deals as I have never paid full price for a pair of jeans there yet!

Shoes:  Kelly & Katie Whitney Flat in Red - Current price of $29.95 at DSW.  I love these shoes, especially the buckle that dresses it up a little bit.  In addition, this relatively neutral colored outfit needs a pop of color and what a great way to do it in such a cute pair of flats!

Watch:  tOcs Silver Tone Simulated Crystal Yellow Watch - Current price of $24.00 at Kohls.  I don't like to wear a lot of jewelry when I'm out with my kids, but a watch is very practical...but why not do it in style?  Bright colored watches are in style and I love the idea of a yellow watch popping out of a gray cardigan!

So there is your outfit of the week for a mommy on the go!  What do you think?

Please help a gal out and share this with your friends and let me know if you enjoy the outfit of the week.
